When you have a fraction why does the value get bigger when the denomintor gets smaller? Like say you have 1/2 the decimal form of 1/2 is .5  and 1/4 is equal to .25.  Why is that? It is that why because if you have a dollar in quarters 1/4 of that dollar would be 25 cents. The denominator is the number of times you break something up.
Lets take the number 100 and break it up into 4 pieces and .25 of it is taken away how would you find the answer to how much is left over . To get the answer you need to find out what fraction and  decimal is left. The easiest way is to draw a picture. you can draw a picture of a box with 100 pieces. Then break that up into 4 sections. Next you would make .25 a fraction witch would be 1/4  then you would subtract 1/4 from one whole to get 3/4 left.

Lets say that you have this problem- 2x+(8)=24. How would you solve this? Most of us would start by subtracting 8 from both sides of the equal sign and then divide by 2. That is what I would do. but what is division? I would say it is the act of breaking a number up into even parts. So to divide this problem you would break up 18 into two pieces.
Another way that you can do this is by drawing a picture you would have two different areas and then you would count out how many are in each area after you have gotten to 18. Doesn't that sound very elementary though, drawing a picture and counting out how many are there. what you can do is make them fractions and multiply. In fraction form 18 is 18/1 and 2 is 2/1.If you want to divide fractions you must do the reciprocal of the second number and then multiply.Which means you multiply 18/1 and 1/2. The answer would be 9.
