Lets say that you have this problem- 2x+(8)=24. How would you solve this? Most of us would start by subtracting 8 from both sides of the equal sign and then divide by 2. That is what I would do. but what is division? I would say it is the act of breaking a number up into even parts. So to divide this problem you would break up 18 into two pieces.
Another way that you can do this is by drawing a picture you would have two different areas and then you would count out how many are in each area after you have gotten to 18. Doesn't that sound very elementary though, drawing a picture and counting out how many are there. what you can do is make them fractions and multiply. In fraction form 18 is 18/1 and 2 is 2/1.If you want to divide fractions you must do the reciprocal of the second number and then multiply.Which means you multiply 18/1 and 1/2. The answer would be 9.
